Learn English Vocabulary for Beginners: 1 Week: 10 Spoken Words, 15 Understood Words – Easy as Pie!
Hello, English “rookie”!
Are you just starting to learn English and are struggling to learn vocabulary effectively? Don’t worry, I’m here to help! Today I’ll show you a super simple plan: 1 week to learn 10 words to speak/write (called expressive words) and 15 words to understand when listening/reading (called receptive words). It sounds like a lot, but I’ll make it as easy as pie, let’s go!
Expressive vs Receptive – What is it that sounds so “cool”?
-
Expressive words (10 words/week): These are the words you will use when speaking or writing, like when you want to brag to your friends “I love ice cream!”. You need to know these words by heart to “shoot” English naturally.
-
Receptive words (15 words/week): This is a word that you only need to understand when you hear or read it, you don’t need to use it right away. For example, if you hear someone say “The weather is sunny”, you understand the word “sunny” and you don’t need to repeat it.
Every week, you will learn 10 expressive words + 15 receptive words, 25 words in total. Sounds cool, right?
1 Week Plan – Learn Vocabulary Without “Sweating”
I'll break it down for you, just learn a little bit each day, no pressure!
Day 1-2: Learn 5 expressive words + 7 receptive words
-
Expressive (used in speaking): “happy”, “sad”, “eat”, “drink”, “sleep”.
Try saying: “I eat rice.” or “I sleep at night.” -
Receptive (just understand): “hot”, “cold”, “big”, “small”, “fast”, “slow”, “run”.
Listening comprehension example: Someone says “The dog is big.”, you understand “big” as big, that's fine!
Day 3-5: Add 3 expressive words + 5 receptive words
-
Expressive: “like”, “go”, “play”.
Try saying: “I like to play.” -
Receptive: “jump”, “walk”, “sit”, “stand”, “beautiful”.
Listening comprehension example: “She is beautiful.” (She is beautiful), you understand “beautiful” is beautiful, no need to repeat.
Day 6-7: Learn 2 expressive words + 3 receptive words
-
Expressive: “yes”, “no”.
Try saying: “Yes, I like to eat.” -
Receptive: “good”, “bad”, “funny”.
Listening comprehension example: “He is funny.” (He is funny), just understand the word “funny”!
Total: 10 expressive words + 15 receptive words. After a week, you have 25 words in hand, isn't that great?
"Awesome" study tips to remember for a long time
Learning vocabulary is not just about “memorizing”, it has to be fun too! Try these ways:
-
Talking to yourself – Sounds cool!: Use the expressive words you just learned to speak for yourself. For example: “I eat. I drink. I sleep. Yes, I like to play!” The more you say them, the more natural they become!
-
Listen and guess the meaning: Use receptive words to practice understanding. Find a simple video on YouTube (like “English for beginners”) and listen to see which words you recognize. Listen to “The car is fast.” You understand “fast” means fast – you’re good!
-
Paper all over the house: Write the words on paper and stick them where you see them often: “eat” in the kitchen, “sleep” in the bed. Every time you see it, you’ll remember it right away!
Funny situations when learning vocabulary
Learning new words and making mistakes is also cute, check it out:
-
Example 1: You want to say “I eat rice”, but forget the word “eat”, so you say “I… um… rice!”
Beauty: Smile, then say: “Oh, I mean… I eat rice! Yummy!” Everyone will understand! -
Example 2: You hear “The cat is small,” but forget what “small” means.
Beauty x2: Use your hands to make the sign: “Small… you know… like this!”, smile while making the sign, and everyone will nod in agreement!
“Learn vocabulary to use, not to show off!”
Learning English is like practicing soccer. You will miss at first, but if you practice, you will hit the target. 10 expressive words and 15 receptive words per week is a reasonable goal for beginners. Don’t stress, just learn, use, and you will see yourself improving every day. The important thing is to have fun while learning!
