TOEIC Test Structure – Supporting Your Child to Succeed in an International Working Environment

Introduction to TOEIC

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is an exam that assesses English proficiency in the workplace, especially suitable for students aiming for an international career. TOEIC scores are recognized by many companies around the world, giving your children an advantage when applying for jobs.

TOEIC test structure

The TOEIC test has two main parts, depending on the registration form:

  1. Listening & Reading (Listening and Reading – 200 questions, 120 minutes)

    • Listening (45 minutes, 100 questions): Listen to work conversations and choose the correct answers. Example: Listen to a phone call and choose the correct information.

    • Reading (75 minutes, 100 questions): Read emails, reports and fill in the blanks or choose the correct answer. Example: Read a company announcement and choose the correct answer.

    • Maximum total score is 990, usually 700-800 is needed for international jobs.

  2. Speaking & Writing (Speaking and Writing – 80 minutes, optional)

    • Speaking (20 minutes): Answer questions like “Describe your job.”

    • Writing (60 minutes): Write an email or short paragraph. Maximum score 400.

How to help your child prepare?

  • Intensive listening practice: Parents can encourage their children to listen to news or business conversations in English.

  • Support reading documents: Provide English work documents for your child to practice reading comprehension.

  • Create a speaking and writing environment: Practice writing emails or talking about hypothetical jobs with your child.
